Week 4 Assignment
ECE 313 Collaboration with Parents and Community
Children's Story
, Scenario: Shane has a difficult time separating from his mother each morning. At drop
off, he clings to her and screams uncontrollably. After she leaves, Shane continues to scream and
cry until you are able to soothe him.
Outline a specific plan for addressing the discipline or guidance scenario.
Upon arrivalat the center, I will make sure that the family feels welcomed and
comfortable. I will express to Shane's mom that having a routine in the morning is essential and
for it to be consistent. Shane will need reassurance that his mother will return for him. Keep his
mind preoccupied with his daily routine at school. When mom leaves, I will make sure that they
say goodbye to eachother rather than mom sneaking out. Each day I will learn something new
about him to help him with his separation anxiety and offer him something new to do to comfort
him.
Each day I get to observe how Shane is doing as he arrives at school. With seeing how
transitions are going, I will be able to talk with mom and explain what I am seeing in the
classroom transition. I will explain my plans on how to help Shane with the daily transitions and
how I will be setting up a routine for him upon arrival. The more I get to know Shane, the more I
will learn about his needs, comforts him in the best parts of his culture, and see how the parent
communicates best with Shane. I want to remind the parents that they are the first teachers for
Shane, and keeping the communication open with them will help the staff at the center better
serve his needs at the center.
Explain how your plan would support the teaching approach/setting.
